Under the Hood
Brain Biology & Graphic Design
From the Artist:“To create this piece I thought about the mechanical nature of the brain and then began by sketching and developing the idea to bring it to life. The different sections of the brain are visually very interesting to me and I wanted to show how they can be different yet work together. The final piece was created using mixed media.”

The Science
Erendira Citlalli Diaz de Leon from Aguascalientes, Mexico conducted a study to analyze brain activity of high school students to evaluate their development in different areas of the brain. What Erendira found was that many students are behind level in certain cortical areas of the brain such as ability to detect audio signals, ability to interpret meaning of sentences, ability to recognize visual symbols and the ability to detect visual signals. The researcher developed a new software tool with the ability to measure these areas separately from each other and help attribute development to certain parts of the brain.
