Everlasting Energy
Walk to Charge & Ink/Graphic Design
From the Artist:“The figure on the left is wearing a heavy backpack with chargers and stands with an empty phone battery while the “Hiking Boot with Battery Charger” guy merrily runs without extra weight. The symbolic electric flow runs from his boot to his phone slowly transforming into more organic shapes as it gets closer to the phone.
This project has the power to change the way we think about generating energy. To create this piece, I started out by writing down all my ideas instead of sketching them. After that I picked the best idea and evolved it using a pen and then a computer.”

The Science
Utah native Braxton Harris wanted to make mobile devices truly mobile by using walking to generate electricity. Using an oscilloscope, an inductor, a resister and magnets, the power from a foot’s swinging movement can be captured. Braxton wrote a computer program to evaluate the 12,000 data points for each swing of a foot to eliminate noise, and create an accurate model for generating electricity. In practical terms Braxton created a hiking boot charger that can recharge a cell-phone battery with 100,000 steps.
